How To Ban Segway Scooters
From Sidewalks in Your Area
Now that San Francisco has
shown that Segway scooters can be banned from the sidewalks, it is time for
other cities to protect pedestrians.
- Create coalition of interested
groups. Especially concentrate on seniors, the disability community, and pedestrians
advocates. A coalition is vital for legislation to succeed.
- Create list of why Segway
scooters would be a problem. See the Walk San Francisco
list for a good start.
- Find a local politician
to champion your cause
- Work with the local politician
to draft legislation. See the San Francisco legislation
for an example.
- Contact local Department
of Public Health, and traffic engineers, and other city workers and officials
in order to get support
- Publicly state that you
want to work with Segway to make streets safer for all users, including Segway
riders. Segway will look bad by refusing to try to help. After all, they are
only interested in selling their product.
- Send out press releases.
The press loves stories about how silly Segway scooters are.
- Work with politician
to get support of other politicians
Segway will counter by giving
demonstrations of their fun scooter to all the politicians. This is not a problem
because you are not anti-Segway. Sure Segways are fun to ride. The problem is
if people would use them on the sidewalk. Politicians understand this. After
all, bicycles are also fun to ride, but they too don't belong on the sidewalks.
It also helps to remind politicians that you will be voting in the next election,
long after the Segway lobbyists have left.
